Scientology's Wrath Rates Enemy
The net result of the Church of Scientology's legal tussle with Google over links to a website critical of the church's teachings has simply encouraged more visitors to that site. Clambake now has more sites linked to it, and thus raised its profile on Google to second place behind the Church of Scientology Home Page.

This demonstrates how linking to a website raises the site's 'importance' on Google. The more relevent the link the better for the site, since each link counts as a vote, thus ranking it higher. Google measures relevence through its Page Rank formula, letting people rather than meta tags determine how high a page ranks. It also looks for pages from other domain names that link to the subject, adding 'importance' if they are highly ranked. The controversy has drawn media attention to Clambake, linking syndicated news items, all of which creates yet more links.
